Let Me Be a Firework to Get a Glimpse of You… (a July 4th poem of grief and hope)

Let me be a firework,

To get a glimpse of you.

Shoot me up to Heaven where

Eternal love is true.

Humid, indigo night sky,

Lit with fires of July,

So surreal, I wonder still,

Why did you have to die?

We went this year (without you)

And looked up in the blue,

And no one had to say it;

We all knew it was true:

Dancing lights lit up the sky,

With booming sounds behind;

Our eyes took in the dazzle,

But you were on our mind.

I know we all were thinking

A thought that was the same;

Each firework shot upward,

Just seemed to shout your name.

I know there is a purpose,

But still it seems unfair;

To wait on Earth, just knowing…

You flit and fly up there.

You’re kind of like a firefly;

We saw their lights shine too,

Dancers, flying out of reach,

Enjoying what they do.

God, let me be a firework

And shoot me to the sky

To glimpse at my one true love…

For then, it’s not goodbye.

Let me be a firework,

My light to reach his sound,

And bring us both together;

We’ll never touch the ground.

I know I need to wait here;

It hurts that he’s so far,

So let me be a firework,

Until I am a star.

Poetry

My husband, Dave Pelleman battled rare aggressive cancer for an entire year. He died on February 21, 2023. Though it’s still unbelievably difficult and painful; my husband left me behind with the most beautiful gifts of three children: twin adult sons, and a teenaged daughter. I love them so much, and we are a great source of comfort to each other!

I believe God is calling me to write about grief to encourage others, but it’s a slow painful process to be able to do this. So, I told Him I was going to need some serious help. In answer to that prayer, I feel Jesus guiding me, so I’m starting with some poetry. Writing a poem is a comforting and creative way I can harness my emotions, powerfully condense them, and express myself in a raw moment of time. My writing is a gift from God, and He gets all the credit.

I hope you’ll join me on the journey. I’m just figuring it out as I go. If you’re hurting and you need some hope; the silver lining is that you’re not alone!

In Christ,

Angela Royse Pelleman

    Angela — I feel your pain. I know God is with you and one day will reveal His plan for your life without David by your side. There is a scripture in Daniel 12:3 that I was reminded of when I read your post. “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” You have been on my heart and in my prayers. Love you Sister – Linda
